The true story of a paper mountain, a lamp that almost went out, and the system that finally learned to carry its own burden.

01 · OUR PROGRAM · EVERY DAY
This is how the work got done in our program: sign-in sheets, hand-tallied hours, binders, and a monthly weekend spent importing it all into Excel. I can only speak for ours — this is what ours looked like.
For our roughly 15-student program, that's an estimated 3,000–4,500 hours a year of clerical work. The paper never stops falling.
And at the end of it — no clean audit trail. Just the mountain.
02 · WHERE PROGRESS WENT
Somewhere in that pile, a student reached a real milestone. It landed in a spreadsheet cell, between a thousand other numbers.
They never saw it happen, so they never felt it. And without that feedback, some of them slid backwards.
03 · NOV 2025 · AFTER HOURS
November 2025. Everyone else had gone home. I kept sitting with the same question:
What if the day could write itself down? I started building at night. First idea, first prototype — just track the hours.
04 · V1 · THE TRACKER
The first system worked. Hours went in, hours came out. The paper mountain shrank.
But now the students had a new chore: stop, every day, and type out what they did. A checkpoint at the end of every afternoon. The improvement was negligible.
A real college student never ends their day doing data entry about their own life. I hadn't removed the burden — I'd handed it to the people I was trying to free.
I was getting frustrated with my own system. It was starting to feel like it was extracting from the students instead of serving them. I was losing sight of why we were doing any of this — of what actually mattered for them.
05 · THE REALIZATION
Look at the scale. The weight never went away. It just moved — from the staff's shoulders onto the students'.
"Stop moving the weight. Remove it. The system should carry the burden — not the people."Bringing our students tools that truly prepare them for independence became the mission. What matters for the students became the design rule for everything that followed.
06 · DEC 2025 → JUL 2026 · ~1,500 HOURS OF NIGHTS
So I rebuilt everything underneath. And over those months one more thing became clear: a system that supports the students must itself be supported — tools beneath tools.
Schedules that turn themselves into logged hours. Night jobs that close what people forget. A ledger that writes itself. So that the burden of proof never rides on anyone's back again.
07 · THE SCHEDULE, GIVEN BACK
So we gave the schedule back to its rightful owner. Students build their own days now — block by block. Class, work, gym, lunch: they pick it, they place it, they own it.
Staff don't plan at them anymore. The lamp comes along now — mentors work beside each student to bring the day's plan to life. And the plan they build together becomes the system's single source of truth.
It looks simple. That's the point. Underneath sit first principles: the plan belongs to the person living it, accountability lives in the system, and nothing counts unless it really happened.
08 · TODAY · LIVE IN PRODUCTION
One tap in the morning — that's the whole ask. Then they go be a college student. The day they designed is already waiting for them.
The day counts itself. The hours fill on their own — only for what really happened. And when a milestone lands, it lands on their screen, the moment it happens — confetti and all.
Their goals live out here too — set with the program team, then reflected on by the student in their own words: what moved, what was hard, what's worth celebrating. No deadlines breathing down anyone's neck. No percent bars. A story they write about themselves.
And when a student craves independence, we can finally afford them the dignity of risk. Watch the lantern: it walks the first stretch, then stops — and lets them go. Accountability lives in the system now, not in someone's watchful hovering. Mentors are there for the extra push, exactly when it's needed.
09 · EVERYWHERE ELSE
Zoom out. I only know one program's story. But I'd bet we weren't the only ones — good people staying late under small lamps, holding it all together by hand.
What we built instead is an ecosystem of honesty that runs in every direction: mentors keep students honest, students keep mentors honest, staff celebrate every achievement out loud — and the data quietly proves it all happened.
Tervik exists to end the paper era — everywhere.
There's an Estonian word for what a day becomes when every piece finally holds together. Tervik. A whole.It seemed like the only honest name.
